THE BLESSING OF THE GODLY (1)

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful” – Psalms 1:1.

The Scriptures of the Holy Bible are full of pronouncements of God’s favour over His people. This fact more than
all else demonstrates the desire and readiness of the Almighty God to do mankind good. Indeed His thoughts towards us are thoughts of good and not evil (Jeremiah 29:11 ), for we are His most prized creation. It is worthy of note, also, that the scriptures not only have the pronouncements of God’s good intentions and purposes for us, but also show how we may access all these benefits. Psalms 1:1-6 is one of those scriptures that shows us how we may access all of God’s blessing for our lives.

What is a blessing? It is the support or reward we get from God. It is the supernatural input in the life of a man or woman that makes him/her to do the extraordinary or have an extraordinary life. However, does God bless everybody? No. The reason is because it is not everyone that has done what is worth a reward before God. Like every other thing we know about God, there is a condition to get such support and reward from Him and Psalms 1:1 puts that clear to us. It is the godly that qualifies to enjoy the blessing of God. The godly, is that man or woman who lives his or her life to the honour of God. The godly are those who realize their need for God and stop at nothing to have that need met. The godly are those who have been washed and sanctified by the blood of Jesus Christ. They are those whose sins have been forgiven, who now live a new life of righteousness unto God. These are those who separate themselves unto God. These are those who are born again and regenerated. These are those who qualify to have the support and reward of God.

Psalms 1:1 shows the separation from ungodliness for which the godly must do who will enjoy the blessing of God. We note firstly, that that man/woman must not walk in the counsel of the ungodly. Notice that scripture makes it quite clear that it is not altogether a prohibition of any form of association with the ungodly, because we have the ungodly around us who may be family members, neighbours, course mates, colleagues, and business partners, but a prohibition of walking in the counsels of the ungodly. Therefore it is pertinent to find out exactly whose counsel we are adopting for our lives at any point in time. We need a filter in our world whose motto is “Knowledge is power” so that with all the information at our disposal, we sift through and discard the counsel of the ungodly. We must not stand in the way of sinners. Having rejected the way of sin, the broad way that leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13), let us linger no more in its vicinities. We must keep in the narrow way of life, the way of righteousness, the way of eternal life and peace with God. The godly must not also sit in the seats of the scornful. They are those who mock God and exalt themselves against the Almighty, but the godly must not be found in their fellowship.

It is interesting how Psalms 1 uses the major postures of the body in the description given. A person may be either walking or standing or sitting. These postures however indicate the progression of involvement with the ungodly. A man who walks in the counsel of the ungodly will soon stand in the way of sinners and eventually sit in the seats of the scornful. From sitting with the scornful it quite follows that he will soon lie down as a casualty of ungodliness. Let us beware of compromise. the more of compromise we allow in form of political correctness, and adopting a way of lifestyle that is at variance with the principles of God’s word, the more our progression shall tend unto more and more ungodliness.

We discover in Psalm 1:2 what the godly must do if he will avoid walking in the counsel of the ungodly, standing in the way of sinners and sitting in with the scornful. That man or woman who will enjoy God’s blessing must be the one that delights in the word of God. the word of God will enable the godly to see the pitfalls in the counsels of the ungodly. The word of God of God will show him the end of sinners and the scorn which God shall scorn the scornful. How much attention do we give to the word of God? Do we delight in the word of God to make it the overarching principle of our lives? How much are we committed to living in obedience to the word of God? Let us from henceforth read, study, meditate and act on the word of God in all situations of our lives; our social interactions, our business, jobs and others.

We shall move on to see the blessings God pronounces upon the godly in Psalm 1:3 next week. Have you discovered who you are? Are you godly or ungodly? This is the time to move over to God’s side. Surrender your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ and pray asking God to forgive you of your sins and may He grant you eternal life.
